Kachina Heights Arroyo Restoration
In developing Kachina Heights, we had to cross a significant arroyo to access the 8 lots we were developing. While normally dry, and apparently docile, this arroyo collects water from a large watershed, or drainage basin. We worked with our Civil Engineers, and Watershed Hydrologists to design and build the crossing itself, and a series of plunge pools to dissapate the force of the stormwater before it leaves our property.

Taming the Arroyo
Like many arroyos and washes in the Southwest, the Arroyo Ancha suffered from increased runoff due to deforestation, overgrazing, and development of the land above for human uses. In an effort to stabilize the arroyo, and protect the arterial utility lines running in it, there had been a random dumping of rubble, dirt, rock and tree branches in an effort by the utility companies to protect their lines. Our work not only stabilized this stretch of the water course, it gave us a chance to establish appropriate vegetation to restore a more natural ecology, with attendant benefits.
