Kachina Hills Walking Tour
This walking tour takes you through Kachina Hills where you can see adobe homes built by Hays and Associates and the results of the land restoration. Santa Fe’s downtown, the State Capitol, and Canyon Road are all an easy walk through the old East Side from Kachina Hills. In Kachina Hills we gather runoff water for landscaping, flood control, and aquifer recharge. We have planted over 200 deciduous trees and moved over 200 Pinon trees. The water not used by our plantings returns to the aquifer. The map below shows the walking tour (dotted). Each lot is numbered. The letters on the map represent things to look at on your tour and are described below.
Sites on the TrailA. Adobe Homes by Hays Associates, Inc. B. Check dam detains storm water to irrigate willow and plum trees. C. Ponding area stores water from the road and washes above. D. Water is released slowly from pond (C) to further irrigate apricot and apple trees. Water flows to Arroyo Saiz. E. Trail to downtown passes 3 more ponding areas with fruit and willow trees. F. Water enters Arroyo Saiz and disappears in the sand, recharging our wells. There is more water in the Arroyo Saiz than in Kachina Hills. Imagine what this resource could do! G. Ponding area stores water for release through more check dams. Willow trees and cottonwoods thrive in this environment. H. Pinon trees, ash, and honey locust trees are strategically planted to use storm water. I. Water from Kachina Court irrigates a private orchard. J. Two small ponds inside Kachina Court support more shade trees. Getting to Kachina HillsTo get to Kachina Hills by car, take Washington Street north from the Plaza (turns into Bishops Lodge Road), turn right at the lights on Artist road (turns into Hyde Park Road), then right on Avenue Primera to Kachina Hills. To get to Kachina Hills walking, follow Marcy Street east, and stay to the left on Hillside and then Tony Street. At the end of Tony Street, the path becomes pedestrian only. This is about a 15 minute walk.
